Big Changes Coming to Downtown Amherstburg!

Posted on July 21st 2025 by Lalovich

Exciting changes are on the horizon for downtown Amherstburg.

Town council has officially approved a transformative development for the former site of General Amherst High School which will be two high-rise towers that will bring both residential and commercial energy to the heart of the community.

Despite concerns from nearby residents about building height, traffic flow, and increased lighting, the proposal passed with a 6-1 council vote. The project includes two mixed-use buildings standing 8 and 11 storeys tall. Together, they will add 144 residential units to the area, along with ground-floor retail spaces and restaurants.

While one councillor raised concerns about losing some control over future phases of development, the majority emphasized that the approved plan is a balanced compromise. Legal counsel also advised that rejecting the proposal could have led to costly litigation for the town.

Developer Peter Valente, who’s behind the project, called it his largest investment to date. If the pre-sale phase generates enough interest, construction could begin as early as 2026.

This marks a major shift in Amherstburg’s skyline, and a signal of the town’s continued growth!
