Fogolar Furlan Windsor Votes to Sell 65 Year Landmark Property

Posted on March 6th 2026 by Lalovich

A well-known piece of Windsor history may soon be entering a new chapter.

Members of the Fogolar Furlan Club recently voted to sell their longtime property at 1800 North Service Road. The decision passed by a wide margin, with 217 members voting in favour and 25 opposed. For many people in Windsor-Essex, the news carries a lot of emotion. The building has been a gathering place for generations.

If you grew up in this area, there is a good chance you attended something at the Fogolar: weddings, banquets, cultural celebrations, and fundraisers. For decades it has been one of the region’s most recognizable community venues.

Fogolar Not Closing Immediately

Despite the vote, the facility will continue operating through the end of 2026. The club has confirmed that all weddings, banquets, and events already booked will be honoured.

The decision to sell was not taken lightly. According to the club’s leadership, the change comes down largely to economics and shifting social habits.

Operating large banquet facilities has become significantly more challenging over the past few years. Rising wages, higher maintenance costs, inflation, and fewer traditional banquet bookings since the pandemic have all played a role. Many organizations across North America that relied heavily on banquet hall rentals are facing similar pressures.

Previous Land Sale on the Property

Some Windsor residents may remember that this is not the first change involving the site.

In 2021, during the COVID pandemic, the club sold roughly 10 acres of surplus land to HD Development Group. A multi-building residential development is currently being planned for that portion of the property.

The recent vote now opens the door for the remaining lands and the existing building to potentially transition to a new use in the future.

What Comes Next for the Fogolar

Importantly, the organization itself is not disappearing.

Leadership has indicated that the long-term goal is to potentially operate with a smaller footprint that allows the club to focus more on cultural programs, language initiatives, youth activities, and scholarships rather than managing a large banquet operation.

That approach would allow the organization to continue serving the community while reducing the financial pressures tied to maintaining a large facility.

A Windsor Landmark With Decades of Memories

For many people in Windsor-Essex, the Fogolar is more than just a building. It is tied to family milestones and community traditions that go back decades.

From weddings and baptisms to cultural celebrations and community fundraisers, countless local memories have taken place inside those walls since the club opened in 1961.

As the potential sale moves forward, it raises an interesting question for the community.

What should come next for this site?

Redevelopment is already happening around the property, and Windsor continues to evolve as population growth and housing demand reshape parts of the region.

One thing is certain. Few properties in Windsor carry as many shared memories as the Fogolar.

If you have attended an event there over the years, there is a good chance this news hits a little close to home.

If you found this update helpful, share this article with someone who has memories at the Fogolar. Windsor has a lot of stories tied to this place, and it would be great to hear them.
