What’s Next for the Former W.D. Lowe High School Site in Windsor?
Posted on October 6th 2026 by Lalovich
Another major Windsor property could be getting a new life.
The City of Windsor is officially looking for developers interested in redeveloping the former W.D. Lowe Secondary School site at 874 Giles Boulevard East. For anyone who grew up in Windsor or remembers the school, this is a big one.
Quick Facts
- Property: the former W.D. Lowe Secondary School and school yard
- Address: 874 Giles Boulevard East, Windsor, Ontario
- Size: nearly 5 acres
- What the City wants: proposals for new multi-unit housing
- Deadline for proposals: October 20
What We Know So Far
The City is asking developers to submit proposals that would bring new multi-unit housing to the nearly 5-acre property, which includes the former school building and the school yard.
This is now the fifth City-owned property moving forward through Windsor’s Housing Solutions Made for Windsor strategy. Developers have until October 20 to submit their proposals.
Why This Matters
This is the part I find most interesting as a real estate professional in Windsor-Essex.
Large, centrally located sites in established neighbourhoods don’t come up very often. A property of nearly 5 acres gives a developer room to do something meaningful, and the City has made it clear that housing is the goal.
For the surrounding neighbourhood, what gets built here will matter for years to come. The right project can bring new residents, support local businesses and give a long-vacant site a real purpose again. That’s why it’s worth paying attention to who responds and what they propose.
What This Says About Windsor
Windsor has been putting City-owned land to work as part of its plan to add more housing. Turning a former school site into new homes is a practical way to add supply in a part of the city that already has roads, services and transit in place.
What Happens Next
Proposals are due October 20. After that, the City will review what comes in. We’ll keep an eye on it and share what’s proposed once those details become public.
Final Thoughts
What would you like to see happen with the old W.D. Lowe property? Share this with someone who grew up in Windsor or remembers the school. They’ll definitely have an opinion.
