Up to $10,000 to Replace Your Furnace? What Windsor-Essex Homeowners Should Know About Canada’s New Heat Pump Rebate

Posted on October 27th 2026 by Lalovich

Thinking about replacing your furnace? Read this first.

Earlier this month, the federal government announced a $2-billion initiative to help Canadians make their homes more energy efficient. It includes a new rebate program for homeowners who switch to electric heat pumps, and the rebates are significant. But not everybody gets $10,000.

Quick Facts

  • What: a new federal rebate for homeowners switching to an electric heat pump
  • Up to $10,000: for eligible households earning below the median income
  • $2,000: for other qualifying homeowners
  • When: expected to launch in early 2027
  • Stacking: rebates may be combined with eligible provincial incentives

What We Know So Far

The program is part of a $2-billion federal home retrofit initiative. Eligible below-median-income households could receive up to $10,000 toward a heat pump, while other qualifying homeowners could receive $2,000.

No energy audit is required under the announced program, and homeowners may be able to combine these rebates with existing provincial incentives.

The federal government is still finalizing the details, so we’ll have a better understanding of exactly who qualifies once the program launches.

So, What’s a Heat Pump?

Think of it as a system that can heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer. Instead of generating heat like a traditional furnace, it moves heat from one place to another.

That makes it an efficient alternative to certain traditional heating systems.

Why This Matters for Windsor-Essex

Here’s where I think homeowners in our area need to pay attention.

A lot of homes in Windsor-Essex are heated with natural gas, and switching to a heat pump doesn’t automatically mean you’ll save money on your monthly bills. Your actual savings will depend on:

  • What you’re currently using to heat your home
  • The cost of electricity versus natural gas
  • The installation cost
  • How efficient your home is

That’s why I’d look at the numbers before making the switch.

Should You Replace Your Furnace?

If your furnace is working perfectly fine, I wouldn’t rush out and replace it just because there’s a rebate.

But if it’s 15 or 20 years old and you’re already thinking about replacing it, this is something worth investigating before you spend thousands on a new system.

What Happens Next

The program is expected to launch in early 2027. Until then, you can read more and sign up for updates on the Government of Canada’s website. We’ll share updates as eligibility details are confirmed.

Final Thoughts

A rebate can make a difference, but only if the investment makes sense for your home. Take a little time to understand your options first.
