Tecumseh Residents Push Back Against Hotel Proposal at Manning & County Rd 42
Posted on September 10th 2025 by Lalovich
A new development proposal in Tecumseh has stirred up strong opposition from local residents. At a special meeting last month, neighbours packed the room to voice their concerns about a rezoning application that would allow for a commercial plaza, a five-storey hotel, and several drive-thru restaurants at the northwest corner of Manning Road and County Road 42.
Currently, the site is zoned for a mix of agricultural, commercial, and residential uses. The proposed change would shift it to General Commercial Zoning, opening the door for a large-scale project with nearly 300 parking spaces.
Why Residents Are Concerned
Residents living near the site made it clear they do not want this project in their backyards. Concerns included:
- Shadows from a five-storey building blocking homes and yards
- Noise and bright lights from drive-thrus and evening traffic
- Privacy issues, with hotel guests overlooking residential properties
- Garbage, odours, and rodents affecting quality of life
One resident asked council to picture strangers watching children play in what should be a private backyard. Another said the scale of the hotel would “fundamentally change the aesthetic and feel of the community.”
More Than Just One Property
For many, the issue is bigger than a single development. Some residents believe approving this project would alter the very character of Tecumseh, shifting the community from residential and family-focused to more commercialized. They worry about losing the small-town charm that makes the area desirable.
What Happens Next
Council has not yet made a decision. Administration will review the feedback from residents and bring forward a recommendation at a future meeting. Until then, the debate continues about whether Manning and County Road 42 is the right location for a hotel and plaza.
Your Voice Matters
This proposal has the potential to reshape a key corner of Tecumseh, and residents are already making their voices heard. Do you think this is the right move for the town, or the wrong direction?
