Zellers Is Coming Back to Tecumseh Mall, and It Hit Me Right in the Memory

I saw the news this week and had to read it twice. Zellers is coming back to Tecumseh Mall this July.
If you grew up in Windsor, you know exactly what I mean. The Zellers on Tecumseh Road wasn’t just a store, it was a Saturday. It was the trip with your mom or your grandparents where you wandered the aisles, looked at toys you weren’t going to get, and somehow always ended up near the restaurant in the back. That place closed thirteen years ago in March 2013. It’s long enough that some people driving past that mall today have no memory of it at all.
So yeah, when I read that it’s coming back, the first thing I felt was nostalgia. I think that’s true for a lot of us. But I do this for a living, so the second thing I felt was something different.
Here’s the part I keep thinking about. Retail real estate in this city has been quietly on a tear. Rents have been climbing, demand for good space is high, and almost nobody is building new retail to meet it. The space that exists is more valuable than it’s been in a long time. That’s the backdrop nobody’s putting next to this announcement.
When you understand that, the Zellers news stops being just a feel-good story. A national brand looked at Windsor, looked at Tecumseh Mall, and decided this is where they want to plant a flag. They’re calling it one of the first Zellers locations in Ontario to reopen. Brands don’t do that on a whim, they do it when the numbers and the market tell them a place is worth betting on.
That’s what this really is. It’s a vote of confidence in Windsor.
I think we forget that sometimes. We’re quick to talk down our own city, quick to assume the good stuff happens somewhere else. Then a brand we grew up with looks at the same market we live in every day and says, we want back in. That should tell us something.
The new store is going to carry the full offering too. Family apparel and footwear, home goods, toys, gifts, grocery and grab-and-go, seasonal and holiday stuff, and the Zellers-branded throwbacks that are going to wreck people in the best way. A July opening is planned.
Do I think it’ll be exactly like the Zellers we remember? Probably not. Nothing ever is. But I don’t think that’s the point. The point is that a piece of this city is coming back, and it’s coming back because Windsor is a place worth investing in right now. Both of those things can be true at the same time.
I’ll be there opening week. I already know it.
If you’ve got a Zellers memory of your own, the Saturday trips, the restaurant, whatever it is for you, do me a favour and share this with the person you’d have been there with. Send it to your mom, your sister, the friend you grew up with. This one’s worth passing along, and I’d love to hear what you remember.
