Amherstburg’s New Waterfront Festival Plaza Could Become One of Essex County’s Biggest Summer Attractions

Posted on May 13th 2026 by Lalovich

After years of planning, construction, and plenty of anticipation from locals, Amherstburg’s new Waterfront Festival Plaza finally has an opening timeline.

The town says the new waterfront space is expected to officially open during the August long weekend, and honestly, this feels like one of the more impactful community projects we’ve seen in Essex County in quite a while.

If you have driven through Amherstburg over the last few years, you have probably noticed just how much momentum the town has built. The waterfront, restaurants, breweries, events, and walkable downtown have already made it one of the most popular destinations in Windsor-Essex during the summer months.

Projects like this only add to that momentum.

The new Waterfront Festival Plaza is being built on the former Duffy’s Tavern property along the riverfront. The Town of Amherstburg purchased the site back in 2017 with the goal of transforming it into expanded public parkland and community space. That alone is pretty unique.

Most of the time we see conversations about developing waterfront land for private projects or higher density construction. In this case, the town went the opposite direction by turning a former commercial property into a public gathering space.

Phase one of the project includes a new outdoor amphitheatre, public plaza, gathering space for events, accessible walkways, landscaping, lighting, underground infrastructure, and public washrooms.

Future phases are expected to include a transient marina and fishing docks, which could make the waterfront even more active and visitor-friendly moving forward.

And honestly, you can already picture how heavily this space is going to get used.

  • Food truck festivals.
  • Live music.
  • Community events.
  • Outdoor markets.
  • Summer concerts along the water.

It feels like the kind of project that naturally becomes a community hub once people start using it. What also stands out to me is the bigger picture impact this has on Amherstburg itself.

For years, Amherstburg has quietly become one of the lifestyle destinations of Windsor-Essex. People are increasingly choosing to spend weekends there because of the atmosphere. The downtown feels active. The waterfront is beautiful. The restaurant scene continues to improve. There is a strong sense of community that people are drawn to.

From a real estate perspective, investments like this matter more than people sometimes realize.

When municipalities invest in waterfronts, trails, public gathering spaces, and community amenities, it helps strengthen long-term desirability. These are the types of projects that improve quality of life and continue building civic pride over time.

That does not mean every project immediately translates into higher property values overnight. But over the long run, vibrant public spaces absolutely help communities attract residents, visitors, and investment.

And Amherstburg seems to understand that.

Council approved just over $3 million for this phase of the project, with work including grading, retaining walls, landscaping, lighting, accessibility improvements, and other major infrastructure upgrades.

Assuming construction continues on schedule and the weather cooperates; the plaza should officially open by August long weekend.

I have a feeling this is going to become one of the busiest spots in Amherstburg during the summer.

What do you think? Good investment by the town?

Would you rather see more projects like this across Windsor-Essex?

And if you know someone who loves Amherstburg, the waterfront, or local development stories, share this article with them. I think this project is going to become a big part of Amherstburg’s future identity.
